Day 99

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Veer. Great job Veer!

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “Z/z” sound, letter, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /z/ sound.” After this, students brainstormed a list of words that contain the “Z/z” sound.

French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journals: Today, students wrote journal entries with the sentence starter “On the 100^th day of school…” Students described what they will wear or what they will do tomorrow on this special day.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students were introduced to telling time to the half hour. They used their arms as the hands of a clock, and had their peers guess what time they were displaying. Students are differentiating between the hour hand and the minute hand. Students also discussed how half an hour is 30 minutes and 1 hour is 60 minutes.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students started their new Unit of Inquiry about Where We Are in Place and Time. Throughout this unit, students will be learning about our solar system. Today, students co-created a chart to display What We Already Know, and What We Wonder about space. Students have a lot of great questions that we will explore further throughout our Unit of Inquiry. Students also designed pictures to demonstrate their current understanding of our solar system.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
