Day 103

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Bryana. Great job Bryana!

Jump Rope for Heart: Today, students did a fabulous job participating in our Jump Rope for Heart event! We had a lot of fun and engaged in some great exercise. Thank you for your generous contributions and donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation!

We were able to surpass our goal and raised more that $45oo.00 at our Jump Rope for Heart event! Thank you so much for your awesome fundraising efforts! We want to recognize a few of our top fundraisers at St. Jude’s Academy. Special thanks to Marloe who fundraised an incredible $620.00, Emily who fundraised an incredible $530.00, Matthew who fundraised an incredible $525.00, and Kayla who fundraised an incredible $350.00

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “ng” sound, letters, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /ng/ sound.” After this, students brainstormed a list of words that contain the “ng” sound.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students reviewed telling time on both an analog and digital clock. Students are also recalling that we write “3:00” or “3:30” even though the minute hand is pointing to the 12 and the 6. Today, students worked in teams to practice recording the digital time when shown an analog clock. Please continue to work through the review package that has been sent home to practice for the upcoming test on February 23^rd.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students wrote about who they would get the moon for in response to the book “Papa, Please Get Me the Moon.” Students also explained their reasoning to explain why they would get the moon for that person. Students also created pictures of themselves climbing a ladder to reach the moon.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
