Day 101

Happy Valentine’s Day,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Sianna. Great job Sianna!

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “W/w” sound, letter, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /w/ sound.” After this, students brainstormed a list of words that contain the “W/w” sound.

French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Valentine Card Exchange: Today, students acted as mail carriers, who are one of our community helpers. They delivered cards and treats to each mailbag in the classroom. Thank you for bringing thoughtful cards to share.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Art: Today, students created beautiful paintings. Students practiced mixing white with different colours to create lighter and darker shades. Students also used tape to create “negative space” by peeling the tape away afterwards to reveal their finished product.

Math: Today, students practiced telling time to the half hour. Students discussed how “But when the hand goes round, and is pointing down, it’s half past __ o’clock.” Students practicing recording time to the half hour on both an analog and digital clock.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
