Phonics: Today, students reviewed the “Oi/oi” sound, letters, and song. Students used whiteboards and playdough to create words and objects that contain the “Oi/oi” sound.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Arts Night Rehearsal: Today, students rehearsed their song “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood.” Here is a link of the song that students are performing on May 17.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students read a book called “Ish.” In this book, students discussed how their pictures and drawings do not have to look exactly like real-life objects. They also discussed how to convey feelings through abstract art. The colours they choose and the lines that they use can express different emotions. Students worked on an art project that will be on display at Arts Night.

Math: Today students were introduced to the measurement of weight. Students discussed how to compare objects that are heavier or lighter. Students completed an activity to practice making estimates and taking accurate measurements.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
