Phonics: Today, the students reviewed the “B/b” sound, actions and songs. Students also completed an activity to practice identifying words that contain the “B/b” sound.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today students practiced creating pictographs to display information. Students completed a survey by asking their classmates about their favourite vegetable, and using a cut-and-paste activity to record their findings. They also interpreted the data by stating which vegetable was the most popular.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students watched an episode of the Magic School Bus about sounds and sound production. We are continuing to focus on the sense of hearing.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
