Day 46

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Jack. Great job Jack!

Phonics: Today, the students were introduced to the “F/f” sound, actions and songs. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /f/ sound” and brainstormed words that contain this sound. Students also recognized how sometimes words contain this sound, but it is spelled differently. (Example “ph” in phone)

Journals: Today, students wrote messages about kindness on leaves and added them to a tree. Thank you for your support of Oakwood Academy and for celebrating Kindness Day!

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students started the new Math unit called Data Management. Students were able to demonstrate their prior knowledge and understanding of these concepts, and completed an activity that required them to organize and record information in different ways.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students were introduced to the song that they will be singing for the Christmas Concert. Lyrics and costume needs will be sent home so that students can also practice at home. Students will be rehearsing their song during music class as well.

Centers: Students practiced their writing and spelling, as well as math skills through different activities.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
