Phonics: Today, the students reviewed the “U/u” sound, actions and songs. Students then completed an activity to practice writing the letter “U/u” and to practice identifying words that contain the “U/u” sound.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Students have the patterning test on Thursday. Today, they reviewed the pattern terminology that we have been using such as the pattern core, attributes, and how to name patterns using letters. Students were working with AAB, ABB, and ABBA patterns. Students will have the following chart available to them for the test. It is important for them to refer to the chart if they have trouble identifying or creating a particular pattern.

Unit of Inquiry: Today students were focused on the sense of sight. We discussed different parts of the eye including the iris and the pupil.

IB Learner Profile: This month, students are focusing on the “Thinker” Learner Profile. Students read a story called “Caps for Sale.” They completed an activity and described how the peddler in the story demonstrated characteristics of a thinker. Students also had the opportunity to suggest a solution to the problem in the story. We have some very creative thinkers in the classroom!

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
