Day 47

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Zayn. Great job Zayn!

Phonics: Today, the students reviewed the “F/f” sound, actions and songs. Students also completed an activity to practice identifying words that contain the “F/f” sound.

Lockdown Rehearsal: Students did well responding to the lockdown rehearsal today. Students also asked great questions about this procedure.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Reading Buddies: Students were very excited to have our Grade Five Reading Buddies come for a visit! The students chose a book, and took turns reading with their Grade 5 Reading Buddy.

Science: Students are working on our project for the Science Fair at the end of the month. We started by making a hypothesis, and conducting the first trial. We are experimenting to see what design allows a paper airplane to travel the greatest distance.

Centers: Students practiced their writing and spelling, as well as math skills through different activities. We also introduced puppets as a new center today.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
