Day 48

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Zane. Great job Zane!

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “B/b” sound, actions and songs. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /b/ sound” and brainstormed a list of words that contain the “B/b” sound.

French: Please see Mlle. Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journals: Today, students wrote journal entries consisting of lists of words that contain the “B/b” sound. Students are using both words and pictures to communicate ideas.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students practiced filling in squares in a graph by starting at the bottom and working towards the top. When given objects that were two different colours, students identified which colour occurred most often and the which colour occurred the least often.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students played a sound game by trying to distinguish what created the sound they heard when shaking a plastic egg. Some of the sounds included rocks, sunflower seeds and corn kernels. Students also practiced recording their guesses though tally marks.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
