Day 44

Good evening,

War Memorabilia Presentation: This morning, we had the opportunity to participate in a special Remembrance Day interactive display. The children asked great questions, and were able to explore different artifacts, pictures, and clothing from both World Wars. Thank you to Mr. Brian for allowing us to explore his collection, and answering our questions.

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Neel. Great job Neel!

Phonics: Today, the students were introduced to the “L/l” sound, actions and songs. Students watched a video called “Geraldine Learns the /l/ Sound” and brainstormed a list of words that contain the “L/l” sound.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Journals: Today students completed journal entries of a list of words with the “L/l” sound. Students are practicing using pictures and words to communicate ideas. They are also practicing writing lists with one item on each line.

Math: Students have the patterning test tomorrow. Today, they reviewed the pattern terminology that we have been using such as the pattern core, attributes, and how to name patterns using letters. Students also practiced identifying when shapes or colours are a pattern, and when they are not. The difference is that a pattern always repeats.

Unit of Inquiry: Today students were focused on the sense of sight. We discussed different parts of the eye including the iris and the pupil. Students labeled a diagram of an eye, and coloured the iris blue, green, or brown.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
