Day 91

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Krish. Great job Krish!

Phonics: Today, students reviewed the “ie” sound, letter, and song. Students used different materials including markers, whiteboards, and playdough to draw and sculpt words and objects that contain the “ie” sound.

French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journals: Today, students wrote journal entries about their favourite community helpers. Students selected a favourite community helper, and justified their response by recording a reason about why they selected that particular community helper.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students reviewed using number lines to add and subtract. Students are recalling how we move to the right to add numbers on a number line, and move to the left on the number line to subtract or “take-away.” Students should continue to practice strategies for addition and subtraction in preparation for the Math Test on Friday.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students learned about sanitation workers and the role of garbage collection. Students discussed recycling, and how they can also be involved in protecting and caring for our environment.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
