Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Veda. Great job Veda!

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “J/j” sound, letter, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine the Giraffe learns the /j/ sound.” After this, students brainstormed a list of words that contain the “J/j” sound.

French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Spelling: Today, students practiced writing their spelling words for this month.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students were introduced to different strategies for subtraction. Students completed an activity that involved creating their own subtraction stories. Students used words, numbers, and pictures to record their subtraction stories.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students read a book called “Ada Twist, Scientist.” We have several students in our class who are interested in being scientists when they grow up. However, from our story today, we discussed how each of us can be a scientist by researching and asking questions each and every day.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size! Please check out our Action board in our classroom to see all our fabulous learners.
