Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Ahaan. Great job Ahaan!

IB Learner Profile: This month, the profile we are focusing on is how we can be Risk-takers in our learning by showing the courage to try new things. We read a story called “Be Brave Little Penguin” and reflected on how the penguin in the story demonstrated a Risk-taker attribute.

Journals: Today students selected a specific community helper and described what these community helpers do.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Phonics: Today, students reviewed the “oa” sound, letter, and song. Students also practiced their spelling words for the Spelling Test on Friday.

Math: Today, students practiced writing addition and subtraction sentences when given a model of counters on a ten-frame. Students had to determine which operation to use, as well as fill in the missing information.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
