Day 89

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Zayn. Great job Zayn!

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “ie” sound, letter, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /ie/ sound.” After this, students brainstormed a list of words that contain this sound.

French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journals: Today, students completed journal entries with the sentence starter “On the weekend…” Students are beginning to write sentences that include details about activities they do with their families. Students use both words and pictures to communicate their ideas.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students practiced telling addition and subtraction stories based on a picture. Students are able to write number sentences to reflect both addition and subtraction. Students should continue to practice strategies for addition and subtraction in preparation for the Math Test on Friday.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students watched a video called “This is Daniel Cook at the Dentist.” Students discussed the tools that dentists use to help keep our teeth healthy. Students designed their own smile and set of teeth.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
