Day 143

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Eric. Great job Eric!

Phonics: Today, students practiced the format of a Spelling Bee. Students practiced standing up and repeating the word, spelling the word, and stating the word again when they are finished spelling. Students are encouraged pretend to write the word if this helps them to spell the word out loud. Great work!!

Writing: Students completed a writing activity to demonstrate their prior knowledge of how to write about a favourite thing and to explain why they selected that item as their favourite.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Grade 5 Election: Today, students went to visit their Reading Buddies who were holding an election. Students heard the platforms of the different parties and were able to vote for the group that appealed to them the most. Students enjoyed being a part of the election process.

Math: Today students reviewed the measurement of weight. Students discussed how to compare objects that are heavier or lighter. Students completed an activity about how scales will tip when an object is heavy, or will be balanced if both objects are about the same weight.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students discussed different levels of feelings, as well as triggers that can cause these feelings. Students thought about different strategies to de-escalate anger, or how to be proactive in preventing negative reactions. Students demonstrated a lot of self-awareness and insight into how they respond to different situations.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
