Day 96

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Ronan. Great job Ronan!

Literacy: Today, students read a book called “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.” This story gave students the opportunity to practice critical literacy skills. In the story, the wolf shares his perspective about what happened with the three little pigs and their homes. The wolf explains how he was framed, and had a cold which caused him to sneeze and blow the houses down. Students did a wonderful job roleplaying the story, and recognizing the importance of listening to multiple perspectives and ideas.

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “or” sound, letter, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /or/ sound.” After this, the class created a list of words that contain the “or” sound.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Reading Buddies: Students were enthusiastic about being able to engage in shared reading with their Grade 5 Reading Buddies.

Math: Today, students practiced telling time to the hour. Students practiced moving the hands on an analog clock to display the time of various activities throughout the day. Students also practiced using an analog clock and recording the time displayed on the clock.

Unit of Inquiry: Students had a lot of fun in the kitchen today! We had some very enthusiastic chefs who followed a recipe, and were able to enjoy the Rice Krispie Treats that they made together. Chefs are another important community helper. Students are discovering how they can also be community helpers in a variety of roles.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
