Day 112

Good evening,

Presentation: Today, students went and viewed the Grade 10 Projects on display in the auditorium. Students had an opportunity to go around and view the projects, as well as ask questions to the presenters. Students demonstrated curiosity and asked some great questions!

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Ahaan. Great job Ahaan!

Lunch/ Recess 1

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “Y/y” sound, letter, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /y/ sound.” After this, students brainstormed a list of words that contain the “Y/y” sound.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students added two planets to our model of the solar system. Students created both Mars and Jupiter today. Students discussed how Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. They also talked about the “red spot” on Jupiter.

Phonics: Today, students reviewed the “V/v” and “oo” sounds, letters, and songs. Then Eric, Bryana and Krish completed their Show and Share. Thank you for bringing in an item with your assigned sound!

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students reviewed Place Value. Students practiced creating groups of 10 by circling 10 objects. Students completed an activity that involved creating groups of 10 and including the remainders as 1s in order to represent two digit numbers. Students used pictures, numerals, and charts to display their findings. Students discussed how groups of 10s could be counted more quickly than counting a large group of objects by 1s. Place Value will be further explored and tested next year in Grade 1. We are continuing to build understanding of place value through our calendar routine.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students discussed the fourth planet from the Sun. Students described the colour of Mars, and considered what space exploration has allowed us to figure out about this planet.

Students discussed how Earth is the only planet that we know can support life, because it allows us to grow food, and has a source of water. We also discussed how the ozone layer protects us and supports life on planet Earth.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
