Day 32

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Zane. Great job Zane!

Phonics: Today students were introduced to the “M/m” sound, action, and song. They also watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /m/ sound.” Students then brainstormed words with the “M/m” sound.

French: Please see Mlle. Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journals: Today, students created lists of the “M/m” words that they had brainstormed during Phonics. Students are practicing creating lists that have a title, are numbered, and contain at least three items.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Students reviewed the pattern terminology that we have been using such as the pattern core, attributes, and how to name patterns using letters. Today, students were introduced to ABC patterns. These patterns have three unique characteristics in the pattern core, that are then repeated to form a pattern. Students practiced continuing patterns, as well as creating their own ABC patterns.

Unit of Inquiry: Students continued to explore the colours of Fall/Autumn. Today, students explored how mixing two primary colours makes a new secondary colour. Using paint, leaf templates, and freezer bags, students discovered how to make the colours green, orange, and purple. They also were excited about the sensation of squishing the paint.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
