Day 30

** HAPPY DIWALI **

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Krish. Great job Krish!

Phonics: Today, the students reviewed the “R/r” sound, actions and songs. Students brainstormed words with the “R/r” sound, and completed a worksheet to identify words with the “R/r” sound. Geraldine also made an appearance in our classroom to hear more “R/r” sounds and words from the students.

French: Please see Mlle. Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journals: Today students created lists of Favourite Fall Activities in their journals. Some of these activities included raking leaves, drinking hot chocolate, and picking apples.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today students began identifying colour patterns. They also practiced continuing patterns by determining which bead should come next on a necklace. Students then had the opportunity to create their own pattern by colouring mandalas.

Unit of Inquiry: Students discussed how they celebrate Diwali. They also continued their leaf rubbings using the three primary colours: red, yellow, and blue.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
