Day 42

Good evening,

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Bryana. Great job Bryana!

Phonics: Today, the students were introduced to the “U/u” sound, actions and songs. Students viewed a video called “Geraldine learns the /u/ sound.” Students then brainstormed a list of words that contain the “U/u” sound.

Journals: Students completed journal entries about a list of words that contain the “U/u” sound. Students practiced listing the words from the top of the page to the bottom of the page, and included pictures.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Students have the patterning test on Thursday. Today, they reviewed the pattern terminology that we have been using such as the pattern core, attributes, and how to name patterns using letters. Today, students practiced identifying what comes next in a pattern. Students created patterns that included the students in the class. For example, one pattern was an AB pattern (girl, boy). Another pattern was the AAB pattern (boy, boy, girl). Students completed a practice activity in Math Makes Sense to further their understanding.

Unit of Inquiry: Today students were focused on the sense of sight. We read a book called “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” Students then completed a sequencing activity to show what animals and characters they saw in order in the story.

Phonics: Today, the students reviewed the “G/g” and “O/o” sounds, actions and songs. Then Jack, Zayn, Izyan, and Veda presented their Show and Share to the class. Thank you for bringing in an item with your assigned sound!

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Students reviewed the pattern terminology that we have been using such as the pattern core, attributes, and how to name patterns using letters. Today, students practiced identifying the pattern core. Students have now been introduced to all the different patterns, and are reviewing for the test next Thursday.

Writing: Today, students completed an activity to demonstrate their understanding of a list. They composed a shopping list of their favourite foods. This included a title, words, numbers and pictures.

Reading Buddies: Today we had a special treat! We were able to visit our Reading Buddies in their classroom and to see their Science Fair Presentations. We asked questions about their projects, and gave feedback about how their information was presented. Thank you to Ms. Khan’s Grade 5 class for giving our class ideas about what experiment we will conduct.

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Sianna. Great job Sianna!

Phonics: Today students reviewed the “O/o” sound, actions, and songs. Students completed a worksheet to practice writing the letter “O/o” and to identify words that contain the “O/o” sound.

Unit of Inquiry: Today our class made slime as part of our inquiry into the sense of touch. We watched a video, and followed the procedure for making slime. We also voted and recorded colour choices for the slime. Unfortunately, we did not achieve the desired consistency of slime. We discussed scientific method, and how sometimes we need to make adjustments to obtain the desired result. We brainstormed what adaptations could improve our experiment next time.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Journals: Students wrote lists that described the texture of slime. Students are becoming familiar with writing lists that have a title, and are numbered.

Math: Students reviewed the pattern terminology that we have been using such as the pattern core, attributes, and how to name patterns using letters. Today, students practiced naming patterns, and circling the pattern core. They also reviewed the ABBA pattern. This is a tricky pattern for identifying the core, because when it is repeated it is ABBAABBAABBA, and can mistaken for an ABB or an AABB pattern.

Phonics: Today students reviewed the “G/g” sound, actions, and songs. Students were also introduced to the “O/o” sound, actions, and songs. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /o/ sound” and brainstormed words that contain this sound.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Students reviewed the pattern terminology that we have been using such as the pattern core, attributes, and how to name patterns using letters. Today, students practiced filling in part of a pattern that is missing, as well as determining what comes next in a pattern. Students completed an activity in Math Makes Sense to practice filling in gaps in patterns.

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students discussed the sense of touch including objects that are hot or cold. Students completed a cut-and-paste activity by sorting what objects are safe to touch, and which objects we do not touch. Some examples of things we do not touch included a stove/oven, a campfire, or a box of matches. Some of the things we do touch included a pair of flip flops, a baseball, and an ice cream cone.

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
