Day 140

Good evening,

Morning Assembly: This morning we recognized our monthly award winners. Congratulations to Ahaan who received the Balanced Learner Profile Award in our class.

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Diyya. Great job Diyya!



French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “Oi/oi” sound, letters, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /oi/ sound.” After this, students brainstormed a list of words that contain the “Oi/oi” sound.




Lunch/ Recess 1

Arts Night Rehearsal: Students had their first rehearsal for their Arts Night Performance. Students will receive information this week about costumes, as well as the soundtrack for their song so they can also be practicing at home.

Math: Today, students were introduced to measuring capacity. Students discussed how the tallest container cannot always hold the greatest volume. Students compared different containers and determined which one could hold more in each case. Students also selected which different containers could hold about the same amount (even though they were different shapes).





Unit of Inquiry: Today, students measured the height of our classroom plants. Students were excited to see how our plants have grown, and considered what factors we could change to support their growth. This included the amount of water, as well as the best position to receive sunlight.

Phonics: Today, students reviewed the “Ou/ou” sound, letters, and song. Then Izyan, Zane, and Ronan completed their Show and Share. Thank you for bringing in an item with your assigned sound!

Spelling Test: Students did a great job completing their written spelling tests. Students are now practicing spelling words aloud in preparation for the upcoming Spelling Bee. Students discussed how they can use their finger and pretend to “write” the word as a strategy for spelling words aloud.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students were introduced to measuring surface area. Students predicted how many cue cards it would take to cover a flat surface in the classroom. Students used both snapcubes and cue cards as different units of measurement. Students recorded their estimations and results in their math books.





Unit of Inquiry: Today, students created “Friendship Flowers.” On each petal, students recorded characteristics and actions of good friends. Students brainstormed ideas such as “Friends care” and “Friends help each other.”

Phonics: Today, students reviewed the “Ou/ou” sound, letters, and song. Students practiced their spelling words in preparation for tomorrow’s spelling test. Students were also introduced to the format for the Spelling Bee that will take place in class on May 11.

Lunch/ Recess 1

IB Learner Profile: Today, students completed the IB Learner Profile for Balanced. Students discussed how being “Balanced” includes more than physical balance or agility. It also refers to regulating our emotions and making responsible choices. Students read a story about “Little Pea” and used pictures and words to create a reflection about the IB Learner Profile.






Reading Buddies: Today, students were able to engage in shared reading with their Reading Buddies. Students were encouraged to talk about the books that they are reading. They discussed with the Grade 5s about their own connections to the stories, and how the books made them feel. Students are demonstrating greater comprehension in their reading.









Math: Today, students were introduced to measuring distance. Students used paper clip chains to measure the length of paths that are not straight. Students completed an activity to practice identifying the longest and shortest distances or routes to get to a destination. Students recorded their findings in their math books.

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Izyan. Great job Izyan!



Phonics: Today, students reviewed the “Ou/ou” sound, letters, and song. Students used playdough and whiteboards to practice drawing and designing words and objects that contain the “Ou/ou” sound.






French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journal: Today students created and designed cards. Students practiced addressing the cards, as well as signing who the card is from. Students practiced creating a front cover, and inside, and the back of a card. They practiced writing from left to right, and filling the space on the page.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students continued practicing measuring length. Students made an estimate, or educated guess, and measured objects in the classroom using different non-standard units (snapcubes, paperclips, straws, erasers). Students recognized the importance of making sure objects are lined up in order to make comparisons about which objects are longer, shorter, or the same length. Students recorded their findings in their math books.





Unit of Inquiry: Today, students started their Unit of Inquiry into How We Express Ourselves. Students are exploring different feelings and emotions. Today, we explored the feeling of being “Happy.” Students sang “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and played a game called “If You’re Happy, Won’t You Please, Please Smile?” Students had a great discussion about things that make them feel happy, and how they know when someone else is feeling happy.
