Day 117

Good evening,

Welcome Back! I hope you had a fabulous March Break!

Calendar: Today’s calendar was led by Krish. Great job Krish!

Phonics: Today, students were introduced to the “Ch/ch” sound, letter, and song. Students watched a video called “Geraldine learns the /ch/ sound.” After this, students created a list of words that contain the “Ch/ch” sound.

French: Please see Mlle Jessica’s blog for more information.

Journals: Students created entries in their journals about what they did over the March Break. Students used words and pictures to share their ideas. Students are practicing spelling familiar words independently in their journal entries.

Lunch/ Recess 1

Math: Today, students reviewed both the penny and the nickel that we were exploring before the March Break. Students completed an activity that practiced using place value to write a dollar amount. For example, to show 10 cents or 20 cents, students practiced writing “$0.10” and “$0.20”

Unit of Inquiry: Today, students had a lot of fun being part of a model of the solar system. Students are recognizing that the planets are not just in a line, but actually rotate around the sun each at a different distance. They also demonstrated how the moon rotates around the Earth, while Earth is orbiting around the sun. Awesome work!

Taking Action

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size!
